Beaches - A place to relax, swim & surf.
Most of the information in this section will be about beaches on the ocean or Great Lakes.
As per usual in Florida, most of the beachscape backs up to a bevy of hotels. New Smyrna Beach is a semi-short drive from Orlando if you happen to be taking a flight into Florida that terminates in Orlando. It is also a short drive north to Daytona Beach or south to the Kennedy Space Center or Cocoa Beach. I like New Smyrna Beach because of the relaxed atmosphere and the small town feel.
There are nice clean beaches to swim, surf or just relax on. Convenient shops and resturants are close to the beach in case you want to get out of the sun for a little while. I spent a week in New Smyrna Beach...part of the time I was sick and didn't leave my hotel room...but the time that I was not sick was splendid indeed.
Ludington State Park is on Lake Michigan and also has a beach on Hamlin Lake. There is a river that runs from Hamlin Lake to Lake Michigan that you can float down. If you like sand dunes there are many to climb and run down. You can also bike or walk from the camping area to Big Sable Light House on Lake Michigan. There is a large trail sysem that is fun to walk.
Lots to do right in the State Park, but it is a short drive to the city of Ludington where there are many tourist attractions and the city beach with a pier and the Ludington light house.
